Higher Institutes for Research and Other Specialized Institutes:

 The Institute of Marine Research (IMR):

The IMR, which opened in 1981, is located in the Blue Coast area to the north of Lattakia, and is built on a rocky tip extending into the sea, giving it a unique architectural design. The IMR is a five-storey building that contains, in addition to the administrative offices, an air-conditioned lecture room, laboratories for graduate students and marine research, a library, and a photography laboratory. One of the floors is designed to house and receive visiting researchers. Tishreen University has been running the IMR since 1987.

The academic objectives of the IMR:

I. Conducting marine research with special emphasis on:

A.Studying the physical and chemical characteristics of sea water.

2nd.Studying sea currents and tides.

3rd.Studying maritime beings.

4th.Studying climate conditions.

5th.Studying marine pollution and its effects.

6th.Studying desalination.

II. Conducting scientific and economic studies concerning fish population:

The IMR houses the following departments:

1. Dept. of Marine Chemistry.

2. Dept. of Biology and Fish Population.

3. Dept. of Marine Physics.

4. Dept. of Biology.

5. Dept. of Environment.
